Is Google Trying to Pull a Fast One on the Chinese?

Google wrote a blog post the other day on the Official Google Blog called “An Update on China”. They talked about how they have been redirecting users that wish to use google.cn to another Google page Google.com.hk, the Hong Kong version of Google, up to that point. Google.com.hk is not centered and allows Chinese people to still use Google.

From the Article on Google’s blog it seems the Chinese government does not like this at all. Google then went on to talk about how they planned on getting there Internet Content Provider license renewed since there’s expires tomorrow or today since it is the 30^th in china right now. Their plan seems simple from what I can see. They made a landing page for google.cn if you click on the search box it takes you right to google.com.hk. Problem solved… right?

Well I don’t for see that being good enough for the Chinese government. I seem to think that this idea will be rejected and google.cn will go dark sadly. Though I will say I ‘am talking out my ass since I have no background in Chinese law. What I feel Google should have done was make a landing page that gives the user a choice and says would like to use google.cn which is censored or would you like to use google.com.hk. I don’t know but that seems to me like a better idea and one that might please the Chinese.

Like I said before I know nothing of chimes law I’m talking out my ass here. If you have a better idea for what Google should do about China leave a comment.

Google Me

There rumors around now that Google is going to make their own social networking site called Google Me. It is rumored to be a Facebook killer. But what is a Facebook killer. There have not been any social networks that have tried to go face to face with Facebook, or if there was they never got popular in the slightest. So what do you need to make a Facebook killer?

The number one thing Google needs to compete with Facebook is users. If no one uses Google Me then it’s all over. Sure at first people will use it, people like me who try basically anything new. Google has to come out with something that can compel people to come back to the site and something that can make early adopters tell their friends about it and get them to make an account too. Once there is a compelling reason to switch and more and more people start joining the site people will have less and less of a reason to switch back and forth form Facebook to Google Me.

The other thing Google Me will need to have is an Intuitive and pretty site. If people can’t use the site or if it’s bad on the eyes people will not go back to site and the network effect will not happen. This will kill it and I think it just might be the hardest thing for them to overcome as well. Google is made up of engineers they need to have some designers and usability people on the team so that Google Me has chance agents Facebook.

I think that Google is in the best place to fight agents Facebook, mostly because they have the money just sitting in the bank so it’s not like Google is going to go bankrupted by competing agents Facebook. Gizmodo reported that Google might be rolling out Google Me soon. I have sent an e-mail to Google asking about this and the best I got was a no comment. If it is true then it might not be long until we know what Google Me will be like or what the Official name for the site will be.

Google Tip

I have no news to report on today but I thought I would share a tip. Have you ever just wanted a quick look at what the weather is like today where you live or someplace else well there is a tip for that. Just go to Google.com and type in weather in (ware you want to know the weather) and right in that box it will tell you the current tempter and a 4 day forecast for the area.

Welcome To The Beta

Welcome to googleplexcity and before I hear anything I know I spelt complexity wrong. This site if you have not already figured out is going to be about Google. I have been a fan of Google for a long time now. I have found that I always want to write something about Google but I just don’t want to talk too much about Google on my main blog http://mikesworldoftech.squarespace.com. So this is ware Im going to put most of my Google lust on here. I will try my best to keep this blog up to date. Just think of it as a beta. It’s something I ‘am feeling out.
